Reverb.com released Modern-Retro Drum Sample Pack, a free drum kit sample collection in WAV format.
Modern-Retro Drum Sample Pack emulates the drum sounds heard in Amy Winehouse’s hit single “Rehab.” Reverb.com’s resident studio experts Jessica and Noam recreated this classic sound in Chicago’s Rax Trax studios using a 1970s-era Gretsch drum set, a dampened 5×14″ Ludwig Acrolite snare and dampened cymbals.
“Retro-sounding drum samples that pack a modern punch. This free Reverb sample pack includes one-hits and loops in the style of Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” that we recorded at Chicago’s Rax Trax studios. All royalty-free and fair use—download and use them at will.”
Of course, it takes more than a well-recorded drum kit to get this kind of drum sound. In this instance, the team used the Otari MTR-90 tape machine, Neve 1073 preamp, and the AMS Neve 336309 stereo compressor to make the drums sound crunchy and retro.
Reverb.com published a helpful tutorial video that explains the drum recording and mixing process in fine detail.
They also released a free collection of one-shot drum samples and drum loops. All included sounds are royalty-free. You can download Modern-Retro Drum Sample Pack for free and use the included samples in your projects free of charge.
The pack contains 29 files in 24-bit WAV format. All one-shots are provided in three dynamic variations (soft, mid, hard). Unfortunately, the library doesn’t include any sampler patches.
Being that this is a relatively compact drum kit, it would work well in a free drum sampler like Sitala or Speedrum Lite.
